Edgeware operates as a smart contract compatible blockchain. It is built on Substrate and uses a Nominated Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism. It features a community-managed treasury, a decentralized proposal system, as well a comprehensive DAO network. Blockchain projects can develop applications directly on Edgeware with Rust and WebAssembly, or deploy their already created Solidity/EVM smart contracts with little to no changes. 

It also hopes to be able to provide tools to create a more efficient government solution for blockchain platforms by integrating the decision-making process into the runtime of the blockchain. Rewards for validators remain the same regardless of higher staking amounts, this is so that centralized stakes are avoided.
