How Pokémon Cards Outpaced the S&P 500 and Bitcoin

How Pokémon Cards Outpaced the S&P 500 and Bitcoin

Chia sẻ:

Tổng quan về AI

Pokémon trading cards climbed 22.8% over the past three months while Bitcoin fell 20.7% and the S&P 500 rose 4.7%; card indices are up nearly 28% year-to-date versus roughly 13% for the S&P and 27-29% losses for Bitcoin. Retail demand and high-profile sales helped trading-card sales jump nearly 70% at Target in 2025 toward more than $1 billion and the market is estimated at $13-15 billion; emerging blockchain tokenization initiatives aim to improve liquidity and settlement for these collectibles, but illiquidity, counterfeits, subjective grading and speculative overheating pose risks to crypto and NFT adoption and market comparability.

In Brief

  • Pokémon cards gained 22.8% over three months while Bitcoin declined 20.7% during the same period.
  • Target reported trading-card sales jumping nearly 70% in 2025, tracking above $1 billion.
  • The overall trading-card market is now estimated between $10 and $15 billion in total value.

Pokémon trading cards outperformed both the S&P 500 and Bitcoin over the past three months, posting a 22.8% gain while the cryptocurrency fell sharply.

The divergence highlights how collectibles are behaving as an asset class largely disconnected from financial markets.

The Numbers Behind the Outperformance

A card index tracks the aggregate value of graded collectibles, functioning like a stock index but built around physical items. Rand Group compiled the figures behind this comparison.

The three-month numbers show a wide gap. Pokémon cards climbed 22.8% while the S&P 500 advanced 4.7% and Bitcoin declined 20.7%.

The pattern extends across the year. Card indices posted gains of nearly 28% year-to-date, compared with roughly 13% for the S&P 500 and losses of 27%-29% for Bitcoin.

Retail data confirms the underlying demand. Target reported trading-card sales jumping nearly 70% during 2025, tracking toward more than $1 billion.

Pokémon drove much of that volume. Walmart’s marketplace registered even steeper increases in sales of the franchise’s products. Two forces explain the appetite. Nostalgia among millennials and Gen Z adults who grew up with the franchise combines with the genuine scarcity of high-grade vintage cards.

High-profile sales amplified the attention. Influencer Logan Paul sold a Pikachu Illustrator card for $16.5 million, demonstrating the potential returns at the top of the market.

The sector has reached considerable scale. Estimates place the overall trading-card market between $13 billion and 15 billion, with graded cards representing a substantial portion.

Why the Comparison Deserves Caution

Correlation explains part of the appeal. Collectible cards move relatively independently from stocks and cryptocurrencies, attracting investors seeking diversification.

Infrastructure supports that activity. The secondary market spans eBay, which recorded over $2.6 billion in card sales in 2025, as well as local shops, conventions, and grading services like PSA.

Blockchain initiatives are emerging, too. Efforts to tokenize graded cards aim to improve liquidity and settlement, though traditional marketplaces still dominate in terms of volume.

The risks deserve equal attention, however. Large positions face illiquidity, while counterfeits and subjective grading introduce complications absent in regulated markets. Index composition matters considerably.

These measures often emphasize high-condition or sealed products that performed the strongest, while average raw cards may lag substantially.

Speculative overheating remains possible. Rapid price appreciation driven by cultural momentum can reverse when collector engagement fades.

The comparison also has limits. Three months represent a short window, and Bitcoin has outperformed collectibles across longer timeframes.

Whether the momentum continues depends on sustained interest and broader economic conditions. For now, cultural resonance and scarcity are delivering returns that traditional benchmarks cannot match.
