IOTA, or Incentivised Orchestrated Training Architecture, is Subnet 9 in the Bittensor ecosystem, developed and operated by Macrocosmos to enable permissionless, distributed pre-training of large language models (LLMs).It evolved from an earlier version of SN9 where individual miners trained full models independently, but shifted to a cooperative model to fix issues like high hardware requirements and winner-takes-all rewards that discouraged sharing. Miners now contribute GPU compute, memory, and bandwidth to train parts of models in a data- and pipeline-parallel way — splitting layers or data across many devices. An orchestration system coordinates the swarm, cycling miners between training and merging phases to build increasingly large models collaboratively. Validators continuously score each miner's contributions based on quality and progress, distributing rewards granularly and fairly via subnet emissions rather than all-or-nothing. The subnet uses massive web datasets (like Falcon Refined Web) for foundation model training, with live dashboards showing active miners, layer progress, and metrics. It forms the core training layer in Macrocosmos' broader AI pipeline alongside data collection in SN13 Gravity and others.
