<p>ICON (ICX) is the native cryptocurrency of the ICON network. It was launched in 2017 and aims to improve the connections between blockchain software programs via the ICON network. Essentially, Icon operates as a hub where networks can easily integrate and interact with other networks. It aims to mirror real-world economies where various entities such as businesses, nonprofit organisations and public institutions can interact with one another through a common means of value.</p><p>ICX is the platform’s native cryptocurrency. It has a total supply of 949259146 and is used to facilitate transactions across the ecosystem.&nbsp;</p><h3>What are Icon’s key features and how does it work?</h3><p>The Icon blockchain functions as the hub of the entire ecosystem. It uses a delegated proof-of-stake consensus algorithm as part of its network security. Different networks can connect to the main blockchain and communicate with other networks also connected to it.</p><h3>What is noteworthy about Icon?</h3><p>Icon’s blockchain is comprised of five core components: Icon Republic, Icon Communities, Community Representative, Community Nodes, and Citizen Nodes. The Icon Republic forms the governing structure. The network’s overall decision-making process takes place here and comprises nodes from the Icon communities. Each Icon community can dictate its own set of rules, including consensus algorithms. Each Icon community can elect a node, a Community Representative, to interact with and participate in the governance process of the Icon Republic. They receive rewards in the form of ICX for their work.&nbsp;</p><p>Community Nodes in turn as responsible for maintaining a community-specific blockchain. This includes the governance of the given blockchain.
