The US stock and cryptocurrency market crashed on Monday leaving investors scrambling to protect their portfolios. Around $1.75 trillion was wiped out from the stock market while the broader cryptocurrency market lost billions. Bitcoin had fallen to a low of $76,000 but recovered to $80,000 early Tuesday. BTC remains on the edge with investors fearful of taking an entry position as the cryptocurrency is yet to bottom out in price.

Dow Jones crashed 890 points on Monday and at one point had plummeted to 1,100 points in the day’s trade. Both the stock and cryptocurrency markets are experiencing a huge downfall with painful trading sessions. The last time the US stock market crashed this hard was in September 2022. Apart from the US, the Asian stock markets have also turned red on Tuesday making it a global crisis.

Why the Stock & Cryptocurrency Market Crashed?

1. No Clear Economic Policy

The stock and cryptocurrency market crashed due to economic policy uncertainties that have plagued investors since Trump took office. Trump is announcing tariffs on allies without taking into consideration the previous friendly ties shared by both nations for decades. The tariffs on goods are causing distress in the markets with investors sending mixed signals. The reaction to tariffs has been strong turning the markets into a sea of red every alternative trading day.

2. Disappointment on Crypto Strategic Reserve

Trump first teased the cryptocurrency market indicating that the White House would create a Bitcoin and crypto strategic reserve. On the day of the announcement, it was clear that the idea was hogwash as he announced that the government would build reserves on existing assets that the White House already holds through recovery from scams. The government will not mine new Bitcoins and that led to a market sell-off that crashed the stock and cryptocurrency market.
