Tobu Top Tours Seeks to Build XRP Ledger Prepaid System

Japan’s travel and payments sector is undergoing a quiet but significant shift, with XRP Ledger steadily moving into a central role.

Market analyst Diana notes that Tobu Top Tours, a major subsidiary of Tobu Railway, has partnered with SBI Ripple Asia to build a new prepaid token payment platform on the XRP Ledger. Well, this is a strategic push to bring a substantial portion of Japan’s vast prepaid economy on-chain.

At its core, the system will turn prepaid value into blockchain-based tokens, issued on a public ledger and backed by Japanese yen. 

Users will have the chance to top them up in yen and spend them seamlessly across travel, hotels, dining, retail, and other tourism-linked services, bridging everyday payments with real-world mobility in a single flow. 

More importantly, the opportunity is huge and difficult to overlook. Japan’s prepaid payments market is worth roughly ¥30 trillion a year, ranking among the world’s most advanced cashless ecosystems. 

By moving a slice of this activity onto the XRP Ledger, the initiative is quietly testing whether blockchain can power everyday consumer spending at scale, smoothly, invisibly, and without disrupting how people already pay. 

According to the update, the platform was completed on April 7, 2026 and has already secured regulatory approval in Japan, a critical milestone that often delays blockchain payment projects. 

With a public rollout planned for later this year, the initiative is now clearly shifting from development into real-world deployment at a faster pace than many comparable efforts. 

XRP Ledger Gains Institutional Momentum Across Asia 

Earlier this month, SBI Ripple Asia and DSRV announced a joint research initiative aimed at improving cross-border payments between Japan and South Korea, with the XRP Ledger under consideration as the core settlement layer. 

This move signals a broader ambition, not just streamlining domestic payments, but building a more connected regional financial network. 

Meanwhile, on-chain data show skyrocketing XRPL momentum behind the narrative. XRP Ledger has reportedly recorded an 875% spike in real-world asset (RWA) activity, bringing total value close to $2.5 billion. Moves of this scale are typically drivenby sustained institutional testing and integration.
