Colorado DMV Embraces Crypto, Allowing License and Registration Payments in Bitcoin

Residents of Colorado can now pay for online services through the DMV using Bitcoin, according to local TV station Denver 7. The integration accepts crypto payments via PayPal.

Users can renew their driver’s license, vehicle registration, and other DMV offerings by selecting their preferred digital currency, which PayPal will convert to dollars and transfer.

DMV Senior Director Electra Bustle stated, “At the DMV, we’re always looking for ways to better serve Coloradans and leverage technology to offer our services.

Colorado DMV envisions making payments innovative and convenient

Paying with crypto incurs a $1 service fee plus 1.83% of the total, on top of any potential PayPal fees. The Colorado DMV currently only accepts Bitcoin and other crypto through PayPal’s interface.

The move aligns with Colorado’s openness to crypto adoption. It builds on the state’s policy of allowing tax and fee payments in cryptocurrency since 2020. The Colorado Digital Token Act also enables securities exemptions for some cryptos.

If successful, the DMV pilot could pave the way for expanding crypto’s role across Colorado agencies. However, mass public adoption still faces fiat currency dominance and security concerns.

For now, paying for a driver’s license in cryptocurrencies reflects Colorado’s steady leadership in pragmatic crypto adoption.
