AI Overview

FTX initiated its fifth creditor distribution on July 31, sending about $900 million through approved CEX and custody providers Kraken, BitGo and Payoneer and moving cumulative cash repayments toward $11 billion under the Chapter 11 plan. The estate still faces a $1.76 billion clawback claim against Binance, payments are calculated using November 2022 crypto valuations rather than current prices, and future distributions will depend on asset sales, litigation recoveries and approved claim resolution.

Key Insights

  • FTX sent creditors $900 million in repayment through three distribution providers.
  • The fifth payout pushed estimated repayments toward $11 billion.
  • A $1.76 billion Binance clawback claim remained active.

FTX began its fifth creditor distribution on July 31, sending about $900 million through approved payment providers. The FTX Recovery Trust said eligible claimants could receive funds through Kraken, BitGo, or Payoneer. The payment covered approved claims completed before the June 16 record date.

The payout advanced FTX repayment efforts nearly four years after the exchange collapsed. It also moved the estate closer to completing its cash-based recovery plan. However, creditors received claim values tied to November 2022 prices, not current cryptocurrency prices.

FTX Starts Fifth Distribution Through Three Providers

FTX announced the fifth distribution on July 17 through the Recovery Trust. The trust scheduled payments for July 31 under the court-approved Chapter 11 reorganization plan. Eligible creditors could expect funds within one to three business days.

Former customer advocate Sunil Kavuri said Kraken released his payment on Friday. Kavuri earlier reported receiving notice that FTX had transferred funds to the exchange. His update confirmed that at least one distribution provider had started releasing creditor funds.

The trust used Kraken, BitGo, and Payoneer as approved distribution service providers. Creditors had to complete identity checks, tax documents, and provider onboarding before the record date. FTX said it would announce later record and payment dates separately.

The distribution also covered a second payment for eligible preferred equity holders. FTX linked that payment to its confirmed plan and preferred shareholder agreement. The company did not identify another creditor payment date in its announcement.

FTX Repayment Pushes Total Cash Returned Toward $11 Billion

The latest FTX repayment followed four earlier distribution rounds under the confirmed plan. FTX scheduled about $2.2 billion for its fourth distribution on March 31. That payment released cash previously reserved for disputed claims.

Published distribution figures indicated cumulative payments approached $11 billion after the fifth round. The total remained below the plan’s projected asset range. FTX previously estimated up to $16.5 billion for customer and creditor repayments.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court approved the liquidation plan in October 2024. Judge John Dorsey allowed FTX to prioritize customers before competing government claims. The plan became effective on Jan. 3, 2025, starting the distribution process.

The plan promised many smaller creditors recovery above their approved claim amounts. However, approved claims reflected cryptocurrency values recorded when FTX filed bankruptcy. That structure excluded later gains recorded by Bitcoin, Ether, and other digital assets.

Kavuri has criticized that valuation method throughout the bankruptcy process. He argued that nominal recovery percentages overstated repayments measured in cryptocurrency terms. His criticism reflected the difference between bankruptcy valuations and later token prices.

FTX repayment funding also depended on asset sales, settlements, and litigation recoveries. The estate pursued insiders, investors, exchanges, and counterparties over transfers made before bankruptcy. Those cases could affect later distributions and disputed claim reserves.

On July 24, Chief Bankruptcy Judge Karen Owens allowed key clawback claims against Binance to continue. The trust sought $1.76 billion linked to a 2021 share repurchase. Binance and former chief executive Changpeng Zhao could still contest liability.

Owens dismissed separate damages claims tied to the exchange’s November 2022 collapse. The ruling narrowed the lawsuit without ending its central transfer dispute. The disputed amount remained a claim, rather than a court-awarded judgment.

The litigation concerned Binance’s sale of its FTX ownership position. FTX alleged that related entities transferred assets while facing insolvency. Binance disputed the allegations and sought dismissal of the complaint.

FTX Creditor Process Awaits Another Payment Date

FTX entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November 2022 after customers rushed to withdraw funds. Federal prosecutors later convicted founder Sam Bankman-Fried on fraud and conspiracy charges. A federal judge sentenced him to 25 years in March 2024.

The bankruptcy estate then monetized investments, digital assets, and litigation claims. Those recoveries supported the confirmed plan and its scheduled cash distributions. They also separated bankruptcy repayments from criminal proceedings against former executives.

The next verified milestone remains another record and payment date. The bankrupt exchange said it would publish subsequent dates after completing the July distribution cycle. Remaining payments depend on approved claims, reserves, litigation outcomes, and available cash.
