Amazon’s Olympus To Challenge OpenAI & Microsoft’s AI Dominance

Amazon Olympus

Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer and technology provider, through its web services branch, AWS (Amazon Web Services), recently revealed plans to launch Olympus, a Large Language Model (LLM).

According to a Reuters report, the upcoming launch of the LLM Olympus is said to have a massive impact on the tech giant’s online retail platform while also advancing features within the Alexa voice assistant on devices like the Amazon Echo, jacking up Amazon’s Web Services division.

The aforementioned project, when launched, is said to emerge as one of OpenAI’s and Microsoft’s biggest rivals, offering AI-based LLM services.

Amazon Ventures Into The Realm Of AI

Last year, Amazon delayed the launch of Titan, a group of Greek-named large language models that the tech giant is currently using in offering services to cloud clients. The launch of Titan was said to be delayed due to its inferior performance when compared to that of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Thereafter, the tech giant cracked down on fostering the development of a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) model that is unrivaled by any other LLM. Following the venture into the realm of AI, Amazon reportedly invested millions in training an ambitious LLM that is on par with ChatGPT.

According to reports, the model Olympus has almost 2 trillion parameters, making it one of the largest LLM developed. Even OpenAI’s most recent version of ChatGPT, GPT-4, is reported to have only 1 trillion parameters.

As of writing, the exact date for the completion and launch of Olympus has yet not been unveiled by the tech giant, although it is expected to be introduced sometime around December. Olympus is anticipated to outperform Amazon’s currently offered LLM, Titan.

The development of the LLM Olympus is spearheaded by Rohit Prasad, former head of Alexa, a virtual assistant technology backed by Amazon.

In other recent advancements revolving around online retail companies venturing into the realm of AI, Alibaba’s fintech affiliate, Ant Group unveiled its most recent AI model called Bailing. The Chinese tech giant has previously introduced Tongyi Qianwen 2.0, an LLM said to rival Open AI and other LLM developers.
