US President Trump to Hold “Emergency Meeting” on Tariff Ruling

US President Donald Trump says that there will be an “emergency meeting” held on Wednesday to address U.S. tariffs. Trump spoke today at the White House to reporters about several topics, briefly touching on the recent US court tariff ruling. A federal appeals court last week ruled that Trump’s global tariffs were an “illegal use of emergency power,” although they are still in place. The matter could be raised to the Supreme Court if Trump chooses to proceed down that route.

The ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit last Friday found Trump overstepped his authority under an emergency powers law, a major legal blow that largely upheld a May decision by a specialized federal trade court in New York. “It seems unlikely that Congress intended to … grant the President unlimited authority to impose tariffs,” the judges wrote in a 7-4 ruling.

On June 2nd, Trump again made tariff-related remarks, stating, “if the court in some way makes a ruling on tariffs that is unfavorable to us (which is not expected), then other countries will take advantage of this to hold us hostage with anti-American tariffs and use these tariffs against us, meaning the destruction of the U.S. economy!” He went on to reiterate Tuesday that global tariffs are an economic emergency and that “if the tariff war fails to win, it will trigger a chain reaction.” An “emergency meeting” on the tariff ruling will be held tomorrow.
