Ethereum Surpasses Bitcoin in Spot Trading Volumes for the First Time in 7 Years
  • Ethereum CEX spot trading volume hit $480B in August, surpassing Bitcoin’s $401B for the first time in 7 years.
  • Corporate treasuries and U.S. spot ETH ETFs drove demand, with $3.95B in inflows compared to BTC’s $301M outflows.
  • ETH is up 105% YTD vs BTC’s 18%, with whales rotating into ether as traders eye potential Q4 all-time highs.

For the first time in at least seven years, Ethereum has outpaced Bitcoin in both weekly and monthly spot trading volume on centralized exchanges. According to The Block’s data dashboard, ETH turnover on CEX platforms hit nearly $480 billion in August, compared to about $401 billion for BTC — ending Bitcoin’s long reign as the undisputed volume leader.

Treasury Buys and ETF Demand Drive the Shift

A wave of ETH-friendly narratives has fueled the flip. Corporate treasuries have been scooping up billions in ether, with firms like BitMine Immersion and SharpLink Gaming disclosing massive purchases just last month. These acquisitions pushed public company ETH reserves sharply higher, making treasury accumulation a key driver of demand.

At the same time, U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs saw record inflows. ETH-based products on Wall Street attracted $3.95 billion in August, while Bitcoin ETFs bled $301 million in outflows. That divergence underscores where institutional money has been leaning — away from BTC and toward ETH.

Price Performance and Whale Rotations

Ethereum has also been outperforming Bitcoin throughout 2025. Year-to-date, ETH has surged over 105%, while BTC is up just 18% in the same period. Capital rotation toward Ethereum exposure is becoming more obvious, with at least one well-known Bitcoin whale reportedly swapping $4 billion worth of long-held BTC for ETH.

Paul Howard, senior director at market maker Wincent, noted that this type of pivot could accelerate. “Blue-chip holders are treating ETH as the higher beta play,” he said, adding that potential U.S. rate cuts this fall could give Ethereum and the broader crypto market an even stronger tailwind heading into Q4.

What Comes Next

With ETH breaking historic ground in both volumes and institutional adoption, traders are watching closely for whether Bitcoin can reclaim dominance — or if Ethereum is beginning a new era of leadership. If U.S. monetary easing materializes, Howard believes Q4 could see new all-time highs not just for ETH, but across major cryptos.
