Circle Becomes US Blockchain Patent Leader After IBM Portfolio Deal

Circle acquired more than 680 blockchain patent families and nearly 1,000 granted patents worldwide from IBM, giving it one of the strongest blockchain IP positions in the United States. The deal advances Circle’s strategy to build internet-based financial infrastructure and to accelerate innovation and adoption across crypto, tokenized finance, digital payments and enterprise blockchain while opening the door for commercial collaboration with IBM.
Circle has strengthened its long-term blockchain strategy after acquiring a large portfolio of blockchain patents from IBM. The deal gives the financial technology company control of more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 granted patents worldwide. Consequently, Circle now holds one of the strongest blockchain intellectual property positions in the United States.
The acquisition supports the company’s broader ambition to develop internet-based financial infrastructure while accelerating innovation across digital payments, tokenized finance, and enterprise blockchain applications. Additionally, the agreement opens the door for future commercial collaboration between Circle and IBM.
