Amazon in Talks to Purchase TikTok

Amazon is reportedly in bidding talks to purchase the social media platform TikTok, sources tell the Wall Street Journal. The e-commerce giant has put in a last-minute bid to buy the social app as the latter nears an April deadline to separate from ByteDance.

The Chinese internet technology company has been threatened by the US to sell the company to a US-based company for months or else the app would be banned in the states. After a delay in that decision back in January, a new deadline is approaching for that sale to be executed, and Amazon is reportedly a late contender.

Various parties involved in the talks do not appear to be taking Amazon’s bid seriously, the sources tell NYT. The bid came via an offer letter addressed to Vice President JD Vance and Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, according to a person briefed on the matter. Policymakers have often expressed security concerns over TikTok and how it uses user data, as well as its Chinese ownership. Trump delayed a ban of the app back in January to April 5, but a sale to permanently halt the ban calls has yet to be reached.

Amazon To Buy TikTok By April 5?

Amazon already has some existing ties to TikTok. The social media platform has become a major hub of retail shopping, with influencers recommending products to viewers. While the company has its own e-commerce operation known as the TikTok Shop, many influencers encourage people to buy products on Amazon. The latter has also provided some technical infrastructure for TikTok.

Amazon isn’t the first retailer to express interest in the app. In 2020, when TikTok was first pressured to sell to American owners, Microsoft and Walmart made a bid for the company. Those bids fell through, and TikTok exists to this day still owned by ByteDance.

Amazon nor TikTok didn’t immediately comment on the reported bid talks. Donald Trump is meeting with top White House officials Wednesday to discuss TikTok’s fate. An outline for a plan to bring in US investors and avoid an outright sale is in the works, however, it doesn’t have steady legs yet.
