  • President Trump defended pardoning Binance co-founder CZ, denying any personal connection.
  • He dismissed accusations of involvement in a $2 billion stablecoin transaction as political attacks.

President of the United States, Donald Trump, defended his controversial pardon of Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, co-founder of the cryptocurrency exchange platform Binance, claiming he has no ties to the cryptocurrency executive. During a 60 Minutes interview on CBS News’, which aired on Sunday, Trump rejected accusations that the pardon was related to a $2 billion stablecoin transaction between his family’s cryptocurrency firm and Binance.

President Denies Knowing of Binance Executive

When questioned about the decision to pardon on October, Trump asserted that he did not know CZ personally to interviewer Norah O’Donnell. The former CEO of Binance was characterized by the president as an example of the Biden Administration’s witch hunt against the cryptocurrency industry. In 2023, CZ pleaded guilty to charges of facilitation of money laundering, resulting in speculation about the timing of the pardon and if there are any conflicts of interest in the case itself.

Reports indicate that CZ’s Binance helped connect a significant stablecoin transaction for World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency platform supported by the Trump family. When asked about whether there are potential pay-for-play allegations regarding the Trump family and Binance’s involvement, Trump completely distanced himself from any business dealings, reportedly claimed that his sons were involved with “the business” in cryptocurrency but said, I’m focused on doing my job for the country.

Trump voiced support for the growth potential of cryptocurrency, noting his son’s focus on business within the cryptocurrency space. Trump said that the United States is better positioned against China in terms of the development of cryptocurrency, calling it a massive and important industry. The president warned that oppressive enforcement action could harm American leadership in what is an emerging digital asset brand.

Trump described CZ as a casualty of the prior government’s authorization of the weaponization concept, in which he defended the pardon while not implying any personal connection. He suggested that defending the crypto ecosystem is in America’s strategic interests to maintain a technological advantage over other nations.

The president ended his comments by making the point that his overarching goal is to make cryptocurrency successful for America and is also focused on maintaining a competitive advantage in the supply chain. Trump’s statements indicate continued strains between regulation and the emergence of cryptocurrency and digital assets as they become more mainstream.

The pardon continues to be controversial and raises further questions about the separate and possibly conflicting realities of Trump’s family business pursuits and his authority as the president to issue a pardon.
