On August 1, 2026 Minnesota banned crypto kiosks—ATM-style machines widely used in scams—and simultaneously authorized banks and credit unions to custody crypto for customers. The law aims to close a kiosk-enabled fraud vector while creating a regulated on-ramp and custody option that should improve retail safety, boost adoption and custody demand, and reshape local compliance for CEXs, DEXs and DeFi access.
Starting August 1, 2026, Minnesota is changing the way people can buy and store crypto. Crypto kiosks, the ATM-style machines found in gas stations and convenience stores, are now banned. At the same time, a new law lets Minnesota banks and credit unions hold crypto for their customers.
