Lara Croft’s Legacy: From Screen to Controller, Gaming’s Ultimate Icon

Angelina Jolie would be the most desired woman on the planet, portraying protagonist Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, which, by critical appreciation, made much commercial success. Lara has been voted the most iconic character of all time by BAFTA Gaming Awards, downing the characters of Mario, Sonic, and Hitman’s Agent 47. Each game has characters iconic enough to belong to Master Chief, Cloud Strife, and Mario and Crash Bandicoot. They contribute just as much to the fabric of this industry as the games featuring them do. They are such beloved gaming icons, making it hard to single out the best among them.

Lara Croft crowned top gaming icon

In that way, the number of iconographies in video games would be a pretty arduous task, if you would say, to figure out who the most iconic gaming character is. Earlier in the year, the BAFTA Games Awards opened a poll to see who gamers thought was the most famous character in gaming.

On the official website of BAFTA, the results from the poll of more than four thousand people were published, and it seems that to the audience, Lara Croft belongs to the most iconic game characters of all time. The results don’t indicate what percentage of votes Lara Croft got, but what a tremendous achievement that was, showing just how important she is to gaming, even if she has gone a little bit against the grain.

Unexpected results

Mario isn’t a shocker for second place, is he? Well, third place in the Most Iconic Gaming Character award will likely produce a little shock on the faces of most: Hitman’s Agent 47. Yes, for some reason, this bald assassin of IO Interactive has emerged victorious above the likes of Sonic, Kratos, Cloud Strife, and many other characters that you would be thinking of first.

We have Sonic the Hedgehog in fourth place, followed by LittleBigPlanet’s Sackboy in fifth and Pac-Man in sixth place. This left Master Chief and Kratos to go ahead and compete for the seventh and the eighth spots on the list, respectively, while Link from the Legend of Zelda hung in sixth place. Notably, Shadowheart from Baldur’s Gate 3 managed to place in 10th, awarded more iconic than most other video gaming characters in the vote, despite her game only being released last year. However, the rest of the list—from The Last of Us’ Ellie to Crash Bandicoot—is less surprising to be mentioned on this list; however, that does not keep the whole list from being generally helped by some unexpected results. One thing is easy to agree on, though – Lara Croft deserves that top spot.
