World Network Halted in Indonesia Amid Registration and Consent Issues

  • Komdigi has frozen the registration certificate of World Network for some time after receiving several complaints from the public.
  • The Ministry received several complaints from the public about suspicious activities linked to the platform.

The digital ministry of Indonesia has suspended the local operating license of World Network as the authorities found that the project was running under a registration not tied to an Indonesian legal entity.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital of Indonesia, commonly known as Komdigi, froze the registration certificate of World Network for some time. The Ministry received several complaints from the public about suspicious activities linked to the platform.

Komdigi revealed in a press release published on May 4 that it will summon two local firms associated with the operation of World Network and World ID in the country, PT. Terang Bulan Abadi and PT. Sandina Abadi Nusantara.

The step is taken to restrict potential risks to the public. Previous analysis reveals that PT. Terang Bulan Abadi is not legally registered in Indonesia to operate digital services. Worldcoin was also not registered in Indonesia.

The Statement of The Director General

The director general of Digital Space Oversight, Alexander Sabar, mentioned that non-compliance with the registration commitment and utilization of another legal body to recognize to run a digital service is a serious contravention.

He further added that Komdigi requests the public to be conscious of unauthorized digital services and to quickly report any suspected breaches through the official public complaint channels. The regulators of Brazil have so far found that World Network may have impacted user consent by providing financial incentives for accumulating biometric data.

As per the data protection overseer of Brazil, Autoridade Nacional de Proteção de Dados, this could compromise the validity of consent, as the financial compensation offered, like its native ecosystem token Worldcoin, may excessively influence individuals, mainly those in vulnerable circumstances.
