RIP, Kabosu – Shiba Inu Who Inspired the Dogecoin (DOGE) Memecoin Movement Passes Away at 18

It’s a sad day in the crypto community as one of the space’s most lovable faces has passed away.

The cryptoverse woke up to a tragic announcement this morning: the Shiba Inu who inspired Dogecoin (DOGE) has died.

Kabosu, the photogenic Japanese Shiba Inu who inspired countless Internet memes and eventually the DOGE memecoin, took her final nap this morning shortly before 8 am, according to her owner’s blog post.

“Kabo-chan

Today May 24

At 7:50 am

I fell asleep…

Outside the window

Birds sing

In a beautiful morning

Stroked me

To sleep

It has gone softly…”

Kabuso was 18 years old, 126 in dog years.

The official Dogecoin X account shared the following post in her memory:

“Today Kabosu, our community’s shared friend and inspiration, peacefully passed in the arms of her person. The impact this one dog has made across the world is immeasurable.

She was a being who knew only happiness and limitless love.

Please keep her spirit and her family in your heart, and most importantly carry her with you as your story continues – we are all fortunate for hers to have touched and shaped ours.”

Atsuko Sado, the kindergarten teacher who rescued Kabosu in 2008, has long maintained a blog about her life and pets. In 2010, she shared a seemingly unremarkable Kabuso photoshoot. Little did she know – she was about to forever change the Internet.

The adorable Shiba Inu inspired more memes than could possibly be measured. Eventually, the internet joke became a cryptocurrency that far outgrew its founders’ expectations and intentions. That memecoin inspired the owner of an electric car company to believe in crypto, pushing digital assets deeper into mainstream consciousness. Now, with the US election looming, cryptocurrency has become a major hot-button political topic – thanks, in part, to the attention brought to the sector by one very cute little dog in Japan.

Rest in Peace, Kabosu. The world will never be the same.
