According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, egg prices in the US have fallen for the third consecutive week, with an average price of $4.15 per dozen. The USDA reported last Friday that the national average wholesale price of eggs has been steadily declining since late February.

That is down about $2.70 in just one week. Prices were over $8 at the end of February 2025 for context, a steep drop in such a short period. Experts are suggesting a multitude of reasons for the falloff, including recent bird flu outbreaks. With Bird flu outbreaks decreasing, the price of eggs is going down as the risk of catching the flu lowers.

In addition, over the past few weeks, demand for eggs has gone down, thus the prices have had to follow. With prices very high in February, people in the US likely did not want to have to buy eggs at such a premium. Also, with Easter falling later than usual in April this year, demand for Eggs for the holiday won’t rise much for another few weeks.

Furthermore, according to ABC News, the US has reached out to Denmark and Mexico and asked them to boost their exports of eggs to help bring down the cost here. Despite the fall in prices of eggs, they are still much higher than in most places in the world. More exports of eggs from other countries will allow the prices of eggs in the US to fall. The report of the US reaching out to these two countries also comes as US President Donald Trump continues to criticize those two countries. While Trump’s criticism of Mexico is well documented, the 45th and 47th US president is setting his sights on the US occupying Greenland, which is currently a Danish territory.

Now, with many hoping that egg prices will continue to fall back towards $2, a new flock of healthy egg-laying hens will hopefully boost the supply of eggs to allow the price to fall further. According to NPR, It takes six months to a year for farms to recuperate when they lose a flock of egg-laying hens to bird flu.
