The iconic show The Simpsons latest annual Halloween special “Treehouse of Horror” returned the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), playfully critiquing the digital trend that has become a cultural phenomenon.

In the episode, Marge embarks on a quest through the blockchain to save Bart, now turned into a living NFT by Homer. The first chapter of the episode, titled “Wild Barts Can’t Be Token,” makes several references to the NFTs and the hyped and overpriced market.

The show also showcased prominent NFTs such as Beeple’s creations and the Bored Ape Yacht Club, contrasting them with less recognized picture for proof collections (PFPs), indicating the fluctuating worth and speculation within the NFT market.

“Remember how we were always saying we wish Bart was less fungible,” Homer says so to Marge, showing Bart’s NFT worth of $1.5 million.

The Simpsons’ Journey with Crypto and NFTs

The Simpsons’ 2020 episode “Frinkcoin” featuring Jim Parsons first introduced the cryptocurrency and blockchain concepts to its audiences. In the episode, a distributed ledger enters the scene, singing that: “Each day I’m closer, to being the cash of the future. Not in your wallet, I’m in your computer!”

In October 2022, the episode “The King of Nice” also made a reference to NFT, with Krusty being forced to take gigs he does not want to because he lost all his money in “NFTs” (in this case, Non-Funny TV shows).
