BNB Chain Hackers Strike With Wallet-Draining Scam on Official X Account
- Hackers compromised BNB Chain’s X account with 4 million followers to distribute phishing links.
- The attack caused $8,000 in losses across multiple chains before account recovery.
The official X account of BNB Chain was hacked by hackers who posted links that led to fraudulent transactions among cryptocurrency users in their digital wallets. On Wednesday, the phishing websites were distributed using the compromised account with almost four million followers.
The founder of Binance, Changpeng Zhao, was the first to inform the community about the security breach and advised users to avoid the malicious content. The incident has cost it some money, but BNB Chain has assured victims of the incident complete compensation.
Security Teams Work to Contain Breach
Zhao cautioned followers against linking their wallets to the fake websites that had been posted by the attackers. The security staff of BNB Chain was also quick to reach out to X in order to suspend the compromised account and start regaining control. The team also filed takedown notices on all phishing sites that were posted using the compromised account. At 8:26 am UTC, BNB Chain had regained control of its official social media account. SlowMist security experts linked the attack to the infamous Inferno Drainer group.
The hackers also used a typical trick of deception by substituting characters in authorised domain names with similar-looking ones. The chief information security officer 23pds observed that the phishing site had replaced the letter i with the letter l to deceive users. The specific threat actor runs a phishing-as-a-service platform, which was developed in 2022 and was popularised in 2023.
BNB Chain verified that hackers had left ten fraudulent links in total over the short time they had the account. The attack resulted in losses amounting to 8000 dollars in various blockchain networks, and several users who also engaged with the links were affected. The organization has pledged to reimburse all the victims who lost their money in this security incident.
Zhao also stressed that it is important to check the domains of websites, even in the case of the links provided by verified or official accounts. The case of how the attackers accessed the account remains under investigation, and BNB Chain collaborates with security partners. This exploit underscores the persistent weaknesses that cryptocurrency initiatives experience in terms of social media account security and community security.
