Independent monitoring data showed that the messaging app became unavailable in all 175 tested App Store storefronts, preventing new downloads and updates. However, existing users continued to send messages and receive notifications without interruption.

Neither Apple nor Telegram initially explained the global removal, creating uncertainty until the app later confirmed it had been restored and would soon become available again to all users.

Telegram Removed from Apple App Store Worldwide

Independent monitoring data showed that Telegram was unavailable across all 175 App Store storefronts tracked on Aug. 4. The removal meant iPhone users could no longer search for or download the application through Apple’s marketplace.

The restriction affected only new installations and software updates. Users who already had the app installed reported that the app continued working normally. They noted that messages, notifications, and other core functions remained available.

The removal differed from earlier regional restrictions. In April 2024, Apple removed Telegram, WhatsApp, Signal, and Threads from China’s App Store after receiving a request from the country’s internet regulator. Apple stated at the time that it was required to comply with local laws.

A previous global removal also occurred in 2018. Apple temporarily removed Telegram after informing founder Pavel Durov about what it described as inappropriate content on the platform. The application later returned after moderation changes.

Apple’s developer guidelines require applications with user-generated content to provide content filtering tools, reporting features, user blocking options, and published support contact information. The company states that failing to maintain those safeguards can lead to removal from the App Store.

Telegram Removal Came Amid Durov’s Legal Challenges

The App Store removal followed new legal developments involving Telegram founder Pavel Durov.

Less than one week earlier, Russia’s Federal Security Service charged Durov with aiding terrorism and placed him on an international wanted list. Russian authorities accused the app of failing to remove channels that they said were used by Ukrainian intelligence services and extremist organizations. Russia’s financial watchdog also added Durov to its official list of terrorists and extremists.

Durov, who holds French and Emirati citizenship and lives in Dubai, has not been detained. He responded to the Russian accusations by posting an image of himself raising his middle finger on X.

He also remains under judicial supervision in France following his August 2024 arrest on allegations of insufficient moderation on Telegram. French authorities have barred him from leaving the country.

Neither Apple nor Telegram linked the App Store removal to Durov’s legal situation. Apple also did not indicate whether the decision resulted from a government request, a policy review, or another reason.

Telegram Returns to Most Apple App Store Regions

Telegram later confirmed that the application had been restored to Apple’s App Store. The company said availability would gradually return to users.

Monitoring data from AppleCensorship showed that the app had already reappeared in 172 of the regions it tracks. That marked a change from the earlier worldwide removal.

During the period when the app was unavailable, existing iPhone users could continue using Telegram. However, they could not reinstall the app after deleting it or download future updates through Apple’s App Store.
