In Brief

  • BofA raised its 2030 server CPU forecast to $210 billion and kept AMD top pick
  • AMD stock's put-to-call open interest hit 1.15, its most bearish reading in months
  • Money flow shows AMD in distribution while Nvidia and Broadcom attract buyers

Bank of America raised its 2030 server CPU market forecast to more than $210 billion this week and kept AMD as its top pick. The options market disagrees, with traders now holding more bearish contracts on AMD stock than bullish ones.

AMD closed at $483.01 yesterday, roughly double its April price. Behind the rally, positioning data shows protection buying, money outflows, and hedge funds trimming the stock. Instead, they are now choosing Nvidia.

Why Is Bank of America Betting on AMD?

The bank lifted its forecast from $170 billion, nearly five times the estimated 2025 market, and expects 36% annual growth through 2030. The driver is agentic AI, the software agents that complete multi-step tasks without waiting for human instructions.

Analyst Vivek Arya argues that those agents turn the CPU into the coordination layer of the data center. He calls agentic AI a powerful demand accelerant and sees the balance of one CPU for every four GPUs moving to one for one.

AMD remains the bank’s preferred CPU name in the AI chip stocks race. The same thesis drove its rare double upgrade of Intel in June.

Why Are Options Traders Hedging AMD Stock Anyway?

The caution starts with the run itself. AMD beat second-quarter estimates on August 4 and still fell 8%, a sign the rally had priced in perfection.

Since then, protection has kept building. The AMD stock put-to-call open interest ratio has climbed to 1.15, meaning more bearish contracts are outstanding than bullish ones. The daily volume ratio sits at 0.85.

Nvidia stock shows the opposite setup. Its open interest ratio reads 0.83 and its volume ratio just 0.52, so calls dominate the flows. Traders are paying to protect AMD gains while positioning for more Nvidia upside.

Where Is the Smart Money Actually Going?

Money flow confirms the split. AMD’s 20-day Chaikin Money Flow, a gauge of institutional buying and selling pressure, reads -0.142, the weakest of 10 major chip names and firmly in distribution. Nvidia, Broadcom, TSMC, and Qualcomm all show accumulation.

That marks a sharp reversal. Only weeks ago, AMD had overtaken Nvidia in money flow as Wall Street’s favored chip trade.

TipRanks data widens the gap. Nvidia carries a Smart Score of 9, or Outperform, while AMD sits at a Neutral 6. Hedge funds added 15.1 million Nvidia shares last quarter and cut 4 million AMD shares.

Both stocks still hold Strong Buy analyst consensus. The AMD stock price target of $647 implies 34% upside, and momentum from its Anthropic chip deal keeps the bull case alive. However, the options market is favoring Nvidia as its put/call volume ratio is way lower at 0.52, as compared to AMD’s 0.85.

BofA’s own note contains the tension. AMD is its CPU pick, yet Nvidia stays the overall sector favorite, and the tape currently sides with the latter. Whether AMD’s bearish open interest unwinds into its next earnings will show if traders were hedging a winner or exiting one.

BofA Pick Vs TradersBofA Pick Vs Traders: BeInCrypto

Analyst’s view: The disconnect between the BofA call and the market scenario isn’t as contradictory as it looks. Analysts price in the CPU market for 2030, whereas the options desks price in the near-term earnings prints. If AMD’s put open interest starts going down without a price breakdown, that would be the tell that traders were hedging the year-to-date profits rather than exiting the current AMD stock narrative.
