After Pausing BRICS, Saudi Arabia Eyes $100 Billion Deals With the US

Saudi Arabia is dipping its toes on both sides of the aisle by blowing hot and cold with the US and BRICS. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had paused the BRICS invitation by not providing a straightforward answer about joining the bloc. It is maintaining a friendly stance with both the US and the alliance and leveraging various trade deals to its benefit. The Kingdom wants the help of both to keep its Vision 2030 target afloat.

The nation is diplomatically sitting on the fence and pausing BRICS membership to seal trade deals with the US. The Mohammed bin Salman-led government sees more value in the US but also wants the support of the alliance. They are weighing the pros and cons of the bloc before giving out a final decision and are hedging the invite to their advantage. This gives the kingdom ample room to initiate deals and gain the upper hand in trade policies.

The MBS-led government is in talks with the US to strike mining and mineral deals ahead of Trump’s visit to the Kingdom. In addition, the US intends to offer Saudi Arabia a $100 billion weapons deal, reported Reuters. Leading defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin, RTX Corp, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, and General Atomic will be involved in the supply of weapons. Saudi Arabia wants these deals to go through before deciding on joining the BRICS bloc.

“The Saudis still see tons of value in engaging with BRICS and its member states. They will keep double-dipping – or multi-dipping – with global partnerships as long as they can,” said Robert Mogielnicki, Senior Resident Scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington. “I think the Saudi Arabia calculation is that what they may be able to get out of the US outweighs what they could get from BRICS membership, at least over the short term.”
